July 12, 1908 – Dead Body Found in Teal’s Pond

On Sunday morning, July 12th, John Drew opened his local newspaper, Troy New York’s “Northern Budget.” In it, he spotted names he was familiar with, including Teal’s Pond, Taborton Road, and Sand Lake NY.

The more he read the more alarmed he became. John discovered a young woman’s body was found dead less than a half-mile from the homestead both he and his family farmed for years. Hazel, his now 20-year-old daughter, had her personal storage trunk delivered to their home unannounced on the evening of July 6th.

Neither he nor his wife Julia knew why Hazel had moved her trunk with all her belongings out of her employer’s home. The trunk sat in their home for almost five full days, yet, they did nothing. They made no attempts to reach out to Hazel or contact her present employer.

It wasn’t until John Drew read the article and considered the mysterious trunk did he become concerned enough to visit Larkin’s funeral home. Even more unnerving were the initials H.J.D engraved on the woman’s society pin.

Later that day John Drew traveled to Averill Park to identify the body of a young woman he worried might be his daughter. Hazel Irene Drew – H.I.D.

This fascinating mystery and its connection to the 90’s television series Twin Peaks are available in three movie formats. I even disclosed the dentist’s name; I believe Troy’s District Attorney was protecting.
